Avening Primary School

Sports Zone

We are very proud of our sporting tradition at Avening Primary School. Our ‘Healthy Schools’ Subject Leader, Mr Mark Wilkinson, is a PE specialist, who plays a key role in promoting sport throughout the school – both in terms of curriculum and extra-curricular provision.

As well as PE activities (including 10 weeks of swimming lessons for children from Year 3 to year 5), we have an annual residential for Years 5 and 6, with alternate Water Sports and Outdoor Pursuits; an annual Sports Day; and lots of extra-curricular sports clubs, including Tag Rugby, Cross-Country, Football, Netball, Cricket and KS1 Multi-Skills and Dance clubs.

Despite our small size, the school regularly performs well in inter-school tournaments. Recent successes include the Stroud Area Year 3/4Tag Rugby league, SWR Cluster Sports Hall Athletics competition, SWR Cluster Tag Rugby tournament, the Year 3/4 Stroud Football league, the Cotswold Schools Netball, SWR Cluster Rounders and Cirencester Year 3/4 Tag Rugby tournaments. Many children from our school qualify for Area Sports each year. We are proud of our sporting triumphs. We are also keen to encourage children to participate in events in a sporting fashion, showing respect for others at all times; our children are regularly complimented for their good behaviour at local events and competitions.

In addition, during 2013-2014, we participated in the ‘Be the Best you can Be!’ Olympic legacy programme. The programme was designed to enable children to discover and develop the unique potential within themselves and inspire, engage and empower them to pursue and fulfil their dreams.  It was developed as an educational legacy going beyond Sport and far beyond the inspiration of London 2012 to inspire the youth of Britain and the rest of the world. Drawing upon the experiences of sporting role models, our participation in the programme helped to raise the children's self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as to encouraged high aspirations. We were lucky to be visited by paralympian Mel Clarke, who was an inspiration to us all.

We have been awarded the School Games Silver Kite Mark as recognition of our commitment to sport - a great achievement, which reflects the many sporting opportunities the children at Avening Primary enjoy!
