PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education. Most of the content of PSHE became statutory in September 2020 under The Children and Social Work Act. The Act introduced compulsory Relationship Education and Health Education in all primary schools.

At Avening Primary School, we use the SCARF scheme of work as a framework on which to build a comprehensive, progressive programme from Early Years to Year 6. It is supplemented by myHappyminds, Forest School, value led-collective worship which includes learning about fundamental British values, visits and events which enrich the curriculum - such as from the local police and participation in Anti-Bullying Week or charity fund-raising, and other resources as required. In addition, the classes practice 'Mindful Moments' and each class has a Calm Basket with resources when children need emotional support based on Zones of Regulation. Our playtimes also promote positive mental health and wellbeing, based around the Five Ways to Wellbeing. From time-to-time, children may need additional, more bespoke support. This may come from our Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) or from referrals to the Young Minds Matter practitioners or to CAMHS.

Through our PSHE lessons, we aim for our children to develop essential life skills and knowledge. They learn about key topics such as emotional well-being, healthy lifestyles, relationships, and safety, providing age-appropriate activities and lesson. By engaging in discussions, role-playing, and interactive activities, pupils learn to navigate social situations, make informed choices, and understand the importance of physical and mental health. PSHE lessons support us in creating safe and inclusive classroom environments where the children can build confidence, resilience and a sense of responsibility.

Each year, the classes cover the following areas in their PSHE lessons:

  • Me and My Relationships
  • Valuing Difference
  • Keeping Safe
  • Rights and Respect
  • Being My Best
  • Growing and Changing

In our myHappymind sessions, we cover:

  • Meet Your Brain
  • Celebrate: Understanding Character
  • Appreciate: Gratitude
  • Relate: Building Positive Relationships
  • Engage: The Power of Goal-Setting and Dreaming
