Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain
Guidance produced by the DfE (November 2014) stated that all schools have a duty to ‘actively promote’ the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
At Avening Primary School we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos of our school, through the curriculum and collective worship, as well as through a wide-range of extra-curricular opportunities.
At the heart of our school vision are our five Golden Values – Respect, Engage, Aspire, Collaborate, Hope. These shape our behaviour expectations of each other, our rights and our responsibilities, giving children at Avening a strong values-based understanding and an excellent platform for embracing difference. Respect and tolerance form the basis of our relationships; children embrace these concepts with passionate commitment and a sense of justice. As a small school, it is important that our horizons are outward looking. We make considerable efforts to ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community through, for example, sporting events and many opportunities to meet a range of visitors and participate in educational visits.
