Our Curriculum Intent for PE

At Avening Primary School, we want our pupils to recognise the importance of PE as part of a healthy lifestyle. We therefore strive to give all pupils the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding during curriculum time, while also benefitting from the chance to represent the school in competitive events. We believe there is a type of physical activity for everyone and therefore give pupils a broad range of experiences so they have the confidence to continue physical activity throughout their lives.
‘The Youth Sport Trust passionately believes that providing children with the best possible experience of being active at school is vital to build the foundations for future physical and emotional health. In addition our evidence, which is backed up by wider academic research, demonstrates the positive relationship between physical activity and pupil learning and achievement. It is therefore essential that daily physical activity sits at the heart of the school day.’ – Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust (2016)
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. (National Curriculum, Sept 2013)
Our overarching aim for PE is to promote high standards of physical confidence to support health and fitness.
We aim to enable children to:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- be physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives
The PE curriculum at Avening Primary School is built around the statutory content of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. PE is a foundation subject to which pupils are entitled to 2 hours of curriculum PE per week for all KS1 and KS2 pupils. PE is a foundation subject; the National Curriculum outlines the knowledge and skills that pupils should be taught.
KS1 pupils will be taught to:
- master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- perform dances using simple movement patterns.
KS2 pupils will be taught to:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- play competitive games, modified where appropriate, e.g. cricket, football, hockey, netball and tennis, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance, e.g. through athletics and gymnastics
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
To ensure breadth and balance of the PE curriculum, we use the GetSet4PE scheme which provides detailed lesson plans and curriculum which is carefully sequenced.
Swimming takes place every day for a week before the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays. This decision was taken to give the pupils the opportunity to consolidate their learning and build muscle memory over the week. School staff teach swimming lessons because they have the knowledge to cater for individual learning needs amongst the pupils. A lifeguard is employed by the pool to ensure the safety of the pupils. Swimming lessons are targeted at Y3/4 pupils to target more pupils who have not met the requirements of the curriculum. This also allows a flexible approach where pupils who have not met expectations can continue to have lessons until they make the required progress.
EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
Within the EYFS, the specific area of physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive, and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food. Continuous provision is resourced to ensure that pupils have the opportunity to be active, develop their co-ordination, control and movement in a wide range of contexts.
This is what the children say about PE at our school:
‘It helps keep our bodies healthy’ ‘It helps us to have healthy minds’ ‘We do PE to make friends and enter competitions’ ‘The best thing about PE is we all play together and it is not just for certain people’ ‘We do PE because it encourages us to work together’ ‘The best bits about PE are doing lots of different sports and laughing a lot!’ Owls Class |
EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
We strive to offer pupils a range of extra-curricular activities where they can further develop their learning and take part in inter-school competition. This includes: football, rugby, cross-country running, netball and cricket. We encourage all children to take part in at least one active extra-curricular activity as part of developing a healthy lifestyle.
We also encourage pupils to try new activities to help them recognise the range of activities available to them and to have the confidence to try new activities in the future. Pupils across KS2 have the opportunity to compete in: football, rugby, cricket, hockey, athletics, netball, gymnastics, multi-skills, swimming, dodgeball, quad-kids and rounders. We are part of the Cotswold School Sport Network and take part in any new activities they organise. We are also closely linked to Sir William Romney’s Secondary School to facilitate the organisation of competition with other local schools and use their facilities to develop the opportunities available to our pupils.
The school has been awarded the Gold School Games Award in recognition of our excellent provision in PE and our passion for promoting healthy lifestyles.
SCHOOL SPORTS PREMIUM
The school has a detailed plan to improve the quality of PE provision for all pupils. This is updated termly and reviewed by Governors. The plan includes an overview of sports premium spending and a review of the impact of the allocated funds. This plan can be found in the Key Information section of the website.
